Mephisto is an ancient and powerful demon known as the Lord of Purgatory and a collector of souls. His power rivals that of the Source of All Evil.
History[]
Mephisto is a primordial being, and little is known about his past. At one point, he trained a demon named Dahlia, though she eventually became his competitor, doing business with mortals as well.
Making Deals[]
In 2001, Mephisto appeared before John Henson and offered him wealth and success for the price of his soul in thirty years. John accepted and the demon granted him the services of his oracle, Karliah.
In 2008, Mephisto confronted the Chosen after they defeated Carson and explained that he was promised a shipment of souls. He asked for Carson's soul instead. Billie agreed, since she realized he was too powerful to be defeated and because Carson had just shot Jake. The demon commented he liked her attitude and a confused Duncan asked how the demon knew her name. The demon replied the Chosen were quite infamous in the Underworld and left with a screaming Carson.
In 2029, Mephisto appeared in Nanta's lair with Karliah after the former had been vanquished. He was interested in recruiting the remaining demonic doubles to work for him and offer souls in exchange for wealth and protection. He was angered when one of the doubles insulted him and incinerated him with a glare. He then appointed Karliah as their liasion and had her send over their contracts.
Holding Talia's Soul[]
When telling Julian Turner about her plans to reassemble her soul, Talia admitted that one fragment had been trapped in purgatory ever since she became a demon. Julian agreed to help her and the two went to Purgatory to get hold of the fragment. To prevent Mephisto from finding them, the two wore clothes belonging to the damned, which masked their presence. Mephisto did sense their arrival, but was unable to track them until they accidentally awakened one of the monsters he used as guardians. Once Julian and Talia found his soul vault, Mephisto revealed himself in front of them.
Julian tried to fight him, but was quickly overwhelmed and bound with rocks. Mephisto proposed a deal to Talia, he would grant back her soul and keep her immortality in exchange for serving him. Talia refused, stating she would never bow to a demon again. She freed Julian and he kept Mephisto busy while she recovered her soul fragment. Once she was done, she temporarily trapped the lord in a mirror with a spell, giving them just enough time to escape.
Placing a Bounty[]
After Julian and Talia escaped Purgatory, Mephisto placed a bounty on their heads, which led to every demonic bounty hunter attempting to capture them. When Morrigan was vanquished, Mephisto sent Karliah to retrieve the Urn of Asar and her Grimoire to add to his collection of artifacts.
Powers and Abilities[]
Active Powers
- Flaming: The ability to teleport through the use of flames.
- Pyrokinesis: The ability to create and control fire with the mind. He can incinerate beings with a single look, even when they are thousands of miles away.
- Geokinesis: The ability to manipulate the earth itself. His arrival and voice caused the earth to tremble. He also used this to destroy the wall in Nanta's lair.
- Telekinesis: The ability to move objects and beings with the mind.
- Conjuration: The ability to draw objects and beings into existence from nothing. Mephisto uses this to summon his contracts.
- Soul Manipulation: The ability to absorb, release or contain the souls of the dead.
Passive Powers
- Immortality: The ability to possess a possibly infinite lifespan. Mephisto is connected to Purgatory and thus cannot be truly vanquished as long as the dimension exists.
- High Resistance: The ability to possess a higher degree of resistance against physical and magical harm. Mephisto was completely unharmed by Julian's lighting, though it did prevent him from moving.
Notes and Trivia[]
- This demon's appearance is based on the demon D'Hoffryn from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
- He is inspired by and named after the demon from the legend of Faust. The term Faustian Deals are based on this legend.
- Given that the Source was born when the first evil deed was committed, it is presumable that Mephisto formed together with Purgatory, but it is not confirmed.
