Merlin was a powerful Wizard prince from the city of Avalon. He was one of the few survivors of his kind's war against the Source of All Evil. He later became the mentor of King Arthur and was eventually killed by the Morrigan.
History[]
Early Life[]
Merlin was born as a prince in Avalon and was trained from a young age to eventually become king. He was troubled by this, as he felt his entire life had been decided for him and did not truly want to rule. He was childhood friends with the commoner Ambrosius, though his friend's bitterness and envy of royal blood ultimately ended their friendship. At one point Merlin also became friends with the prince of Atlantis, Emyr.
When Atlantis was destroyed, the Source of All Evil, who already felt threatened by the wizards, used the tragedy to start a war. Avalon was the last of the wizard cities to fall in the war. Before the city fell, Merlin was able to escape with five others, including his old friend Ambrosius.
Mentor to King Arthur[]
Centuries later, Merlin settled in Camelot and found a wounded woman in the forest. He offered his help and she accepted. She claimed to be a witch named Viviane whose village was burned by Witch Hunters and the two became romantically involved. Meanwhile, Merlin had troubling dreams of a coming darkness and became convinced he was meant to help a young man named Arthur become king. Part of his determination was to make amends for the destruction of his own kingdom, as he blamed himself for running instead of fighting.
Merlin began training Arthur and sent him on a quest to find Excalibur, the legendary sword of his people. He later met with Igraine, Arthur's mother, and made her promise to look after the sword when Arthur died. During this time, he became suspicious of Viviane and confronted her in their cottage. She revealed herself as a sorceress named Morrigan and the two briefly fought before separating as enemies.
Merlin helped Arthur claim Camelot and defeat the tyrant king. During the coronation, Morrigan tried to assassinate Arthur, though Merlin protected him. The wizard tried to reason with his former lover, though she threatened to reveal the truth about Igraine and destroy the bond between him and Arthur unless he left Camelot behind.
Final Battle[]
Merlin did as he was told and settled for a hermit life in a forest. However, he eventually met and fell in love with Nimue after saving her from Witch Hunters. The witch later guided Lancelot to Merlin after he saved her life, though Merlin quickly realized it was not the true Lancelot, but a time-traveling Chris Halliwell. They discussed Morrigan while Nimue prepared a potion to send Chris home. However before he could take it, they were confronted by Morrigan.
The sorceress quickly incapacitated Chris and knocked out Nimue, leaving Merlin to fight her alone. He attempted to guide her back from the path of evil one last time, though she replied that the darkness in her was stronger. Morrigan managed to fatally wound Merlin by targeting Nimue, leaving himself open for attack. Despite being wounded, Merlin managed to banished the sorceress for the time being, after which he collapsed. He told Chris to learn from his trip to the past and stop Morrigan in the present, after which he said his goodbyes to Nimue and faded away in her arms.
Visions[]
Merlin appeared before Violet Morgan in a dream about a dark future where the magical virus was released. He told her it was her destiny to stop this future from happening. When Violet was captured by Ambrose, Merlin appeared in a second vision where he revealed his connection to Ambrose and told Violet that she was in the right place, as the answer was near.
Powers and Abilities[]
Basic Powers
- Spell Casting: The ability to cast spells and perform rituals.
- Potion Making: The ability to brew magical potions.
Active Powers
- Spiralization: The ability to teleport through swirling blue spirals.
- Illusion Casting: The ability to cast illusions, affecting all senses but touch. Merlin used this to disguise himself as a old man and to create illusions of mythological monsters.
- Sensing: The ability to determine the location and status of other beings by concentrating on them.
- Precognitive Dreaming: The ability to see the future in dreams. These dreams are a less developed form of premonitions, in which the user sees flashes of the future in a vague and often cryptic manner.
- Force Field Generation: The ability to create barriers of energy that can be used to protect or contain those inside and repel enemies and magical attacks.
- Energy Blasts: The ability to fire blasts of magical energy from one's hands.
Passive Powers
- High Resistance: The ability to be highly resistant to physical and magical harm.
- Immortality: The ability to possess a possibly infinite lifespan and an arrested aging process.
Notes and Trivia[]
- Due to being a figure of legend, Merlin's existence was a source of debate in the magical community. Bowan once referred to him as an "overrated hack", while Mordaunt mentioned he never existed.
- Bowan's statement about Merlin being overrated may be due to him knowing Ambrose, who repeatedly bested Merlin when they were young.
- According to Laura Mitchell, many magical researchers and scholars have attempted to summon his spirit without success, due to his reincarnation. This could be one of the causes that led to the belief that he was a legendary character.
- In some legends Merlin is depicted as a half-demon. In the universe of the series this rumor could have arisen from his relationship with Morrigan.
