"I know exactly who you are, Arthur, and who you will become. If I cannot beat you this time, I shall do it in another lifetime."
—Morrigan to King Arthur.[src]

Morrigan, formally known as The Morrigan, was a powerful demonic sorceress who was the arch-nemesis to King Arthur and his kingdom in the early sixth century. She was reborn in modern times by infusing part of her essence with his soul, which was reborn as Wyatt Halliwell.

The Morrigan conquered the Underworld and became its Queen. During her reign, she played a part in Grace Mitchell becoming a warlock and was responsible for the death of Prue Halliwell. She was ultimately vanquished through the combined efforts of Wyatt and Julian Turner.

History[]

Early Life[]

The Morrigan was a powerful sorceress in the Underworld, rivalling the Source of All Evil, and her presence caused plants to grow. On behest of the Elders, she used her nature magic to hide one of three ancient prisons from the Source in his own domain. When he learned of this through Barbas, the demonic ruler confronted her. The Morrigan denied these claims and the two fought, forcing the sorceress to flee after being injured. She ended up in Albion and was found by Merlin.

Albion[]

The Morrigan was nursed back to health by Merlin and the two began a relationship. The sorceress hid her true nature and pretended to be a witch named Viviane, whose village had been burned by Witch Hunters. She began to imagine a life with Merlin at her side as she ruled over the kingdom, though Merlin had dreams that told him he needed to guide a young man to become king. The Morrigan then decided to eliminate the future king. After spying on a meeting between Merlin and Igraine, the Lady of the Lake, the sorceress was confronted by her lover and admitted her true nature. The two fought briefly and Morrigan gained the upper hand, though she could not kill the wizard due to her feelings for him and instead retreated.

The Morrigan used her magic to claim a castle for herself and attended the coronation of Arthur disguised as an old woman. She tried to assassinate him, though he was shielded by Merlin. Upon seeing and feeling the power of Excalibur, the sorceress retreated. Merlin confronted her, at which point she threatened to destroy the bond between Merlin and Arthur by revealing the truth about Igraine if Merlin did not leave Camelot.

Merlin left Camelot and settled in a forest, living as a hermit. However, he eventually found new love in a witch named Nimue. When The Morrigan became aware of this, she sent Witch Hunters to kill her. A time-traveling Chris Halliwell, posing as Lancelot, saved Nimue who guided him to Merlin, leading the sorceress to his hiding place. She revealed that she had become aware of the future and that she would plot her return. The two fought and Merlin attempted to steer The Morrigan away from evil, though she refused. In the end, Morrigan managed to fatally wound Merlin as he was defending Nimue, though Merlin temporarily banished her to parts unknown.

Facing Arthur in Battle[]

At some point, The Morrigan returned and captured Percival, a knight and friend of Arthur, and enslaved him. During his captivity, she began using him as her personal slave.

Prior to her final confrontation with Arthur, The Morrigan brew a potion that would tie her essence to Arthur's soul and proceeded to manipulate Morgana into giving him the potion by revealing Percival was still alive. However, the potion eventually found its way into the hands of Guinevere. She then tricked Arthur into drinking the potion when he would not allow her and Lancelot to be together.

When The Morrigan faced Arthur on the battlefield, she revealed her plan. Due to the potion, their lives were connected, meaning that if one died, the other would die as well and would allow The Morrigan to return once Arthur was reborn. Morrigan was then fatally stabbed with Excalibur by Lancelot. With The Morrigan vanquished, her army was defeated and the men she had enslaved were freed.

Return[]

When Wyatt Halliwell, the reincarnation of Arthur, reached the same age as his past life, Morrigan was returned from the wasteland. She enslaved a Raptor Demon and had him steal the Urn of Asar, containing the essence of the Source of All Evil, whom she referred to as an old rival. As soon as she returned, she began to conquer the Underworld, causing it to become covered in plant life.

Dominik and his friend Kovar went to Morrigan's lair to offer their services. The sorceress agreed to listen to their proposal, but soon vanquished Kovar for his rudeness and violent outburst. Dominik feared for his own life, but Morrigan decided to spare him and soon discovered he was immune to her luring. Interested, Morrigan gave him a chance to prove himself by infiltrating the lives of the Halliwells to find a way to destroy them.

Morrigan later realized that someone was blocking her precognitive powers and realized it was the work of the Seer. After receiving a report from Dominik, she went to take control of a small group of demons.

When Morrigan realized that Julian Turner and the Seer had stolen her Grimoire, she confronted the Halliwells at P3 after failing to locate them. She demanded the return of her Grimoire, threatening to unleash her demons on the mortals in the club. She also revealed the relationship between Julian and the Seer to his family and noted that the latter was developing feelings for the former.

After regaining her Grimoire, Morrigan retreated, though she realized that the Seer had extracted some of her spells. When she told Dominik that she wanted to hurt Wyatt before killing him, he told her to break his heart.

Manipulating the Cousins[]

Seeing an opportunity to turn one of the Halliwells evil, Morrigan had Dominik deliver a potion from her grimoire known as the Heart of Darkness to the warlock Luke. Under influence from her potion, Grace killed another witch and was turned into a warlock.

Some time later, Dominik reported to Morrigan that they could destroy the relationship between Wyatt and Dylan by having Wyatt cheat on him. In order to achieve this, Morrigan granted Dominik the sin of Lust to infect Wyatt. She later observed his sexual encounter with Faye and recalled the sin when it had served its purpose. When Dominik went to report, Morrigan informed him that she intended to make her next move at Melinda Halliwell's wedding.

Confrontation at the Wedding[]

Shortly before the wedding, Morrigan proclaimed herself Queen of the Underworld and gained the allegiance of numerous demonic factions. She sent Dominik to recruit Grace Mitchell. When Dominik asked her for a reward for his services, the sorceress promised that he would get what he deserved once the Warren line was destroyed. Morrigan then informed Dominik that his cover was blown and she later used her powers to enslave Leo, Henry and Coop. After Grace lured Laura and Paige out, Morrigan took advantage of the situation and used an enslaved Henry to reveal the truth about the Heart of Darkness.

At the same time, Morrigan confronted the Halliwells in the church, leading to a heated battle where Julian was able to free Wyatt's soul but Prue was tragically killed by Morrigan after temporarily restraining her. Chris was able to return with the restored Excalibur and, with the assistance of Julian, Wyatt was able to successfully vanquish Morrigan. With Morrigan's death all those she had enslaved regained their will, but this also caused further tragedies: the sorceress had decided to take a posthumous revenge and had made sure that in case of her final death, the prison that she had created lost power and so the Dark Elder Selene was freed and soon reassembled the Trinity.

Powers and Abilities[]

Basic Powers

Active Powers

  • Ash Teleportation: The ability to teleport through ashes.
    • Apportation: The ability to teleport objects or living beings from one location to another.
  • Luring: The ability to magically draw in, seduce or enthral other beings. Morrigan could enslave the minds of men and was capable of temporarily taking control over their bodies, allowing her to move and speak through them.
  • Premonition: The ability to perceive visions of the past, present and future.
  • Shapeshifting: The ability to alter one's physical form into that of another person or animal. Her preferred form while shapeshifted was that of a crow, as it allowed her to fly around unnoticed and spy on others.
  • Telekinesis: The ability to move objects and beings with the mind.
  • Plant Manipulation: The ability to manipulate plant-life. Morrigan could control plants and use vines to ensnare her enemies. Her claim over the Underworld caused it become overgrown in plant-life.

Passive Powers

  • High Resistance: The ability to be highly resistant to physical and magical harm.
  • Immortality: The ability to possess a possibly infinite lifespan and an arrested aging process.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • Morrigan is based on Morgan le Fay from Arthurian legends and the Morrigan from Irish mythology. However, this version is not related to Arthur, as that trait is transferred to Morgana.
    • Morrigan is also partially based on the character Morgana from the series Merlin, also portrayed by Katie McGrath.
    • Her alias Viviane is one of the names used for the Lady of the Lake.
    • She is also partially inspired by the character Morrigan from the Dragon Age game series.
  • Morrigan is mentioned by Arthur Cobbs in "House Party".
  • According to Merlin, Morrigan could have been a great force of nature instead of evil, if she had let go of her darkness and craving for power.
  • She rejected the title of Source of All Evil due to her rivalry with the former, instead choosing the title Queen of the Underworld. Curiously, Queen of the Underworld is a title that is awarded to the bride of the Source.
  • Morrigan could be considered the most successful and dangerous enemy the Warren line has faced, as she is responsible for one of them becoming a warlock and the death of another. In addition, she also caused the final demise of the power of the three, at least until the next generation of Warren witches.
    • By killing Prue, Morrigan technically became the third evil being to destroy the Power of Three, as the cousins could use their own version when there were nine of them. The other two are Shax and Anders Blackwell who killed Prue's namesake and Piper respectively. However, Grace Mitchell's transformation into a warlock also contributed to this, an event for which Morrigan was partially responsible.
  • Both times she infiltrated a significant event, those being King Arthur's coronation and Melinda Halliwell's wedding, Morrigan disguised herself as a elderly woman.
  • Somehow Morrigan seemed to know Talia's past and ways.
